Why is the α-amylase test needed?

To diagnose pancreatitis or other pancreatic diseases.

        When should I be tested?

The test is performed when there are signs of pancreatic disease, such as severe stomach pain, fever, decreased appetite or nausea.

What sample is needed for the test?

Blood is drawn from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the survey?

        No need.

What do my α-amylase results mean?

In acute pancreatitis, amylase levels increase dramatically, often 4-6 times the normal value. The increase in concentration occurs within 12-72 hours after pancreatic injury. In chronic pancreatitis, α-amylase levels are moderately elevated, but often decrease if pancreatic amylase-producing cells are destroyed.
