Total bilirubin

It is an indicator of liver and gallbladder function. This test alone is not of great value in the diagnosis of the disease, and should be accompanied by a direct bilirubin test. It is performed in case of suspicion of: liver tumours, gallbladder stones, anaemia, cirrhosis, poisoning of the liver with poison.

An indicator of liver and gallbladder activity, an increase in which is manifested by jaundice. Bilirubin concentrations in the body are not high (250-300 mg per day), so changes in levels are easy to spot.

Total bilirubin is the sum of direct and indirect bilirubin. An increase in total bilirubin is usually associated with an increase in indirect bilirubin, so the test must be performed in conjunction with a direct bilirubin test and the indirect bilirubin count.
