Thyroxine (T4)

A hormone produced by the thyroid gland. The free thyroxine test is much more accurate. Two parameters (TTH and FT4) are very important in differentiating between thyroid diseases.

Thyroxine (T4) is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Thyroxine is the most important hormone in the evaluation of thyroid disease, and if it is found to be normal, no other tests can be performed. However, if abnormalities are detected, tests for other thyroid hormones are necessary. If the thyroid gland produces too few hormones, the person develops hypothyroidism, which increases the risk of heart disease, fatigue and impaired growth.

Thyroxine (T4) hormone is the main hormone secreted by the thyroid glands and is a component of the hypothalamus-pituitary gland, which regulates the thyroid. It boosts basic metabolism and plays an important role in the development of all human cells. T4 is secreted on demand under the action of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH/TTH). The T4 assay can be used for the following indications: detection of hyperthyroidism, detection of primary and secondary hypothyroidism, and monitoring of TSH/TTH suppressive therapy. T4 is important in bioenergetics – this hormone increases oxygen uptake and cellular metabolism.
